A New Partnership - part 6

I didn't spare my partner another glance. It felt like a cold hand had closed around my heart. I stopped at the entrance of the corridor that led to the rooms of the guild members.
(Monty... doesn't have the right to know.)
I shook my head.
(I need some fresh air.)
Monty was still in the dining room when I climbed up to the highest floor of the guild. The only floor above the ground.
The sky was dark blue, littered with stars. I stared at them, surrounded by the sounds of the night and the torches burning behind me.
"Ah," I said softly to myself. "How long has it been since we watched the stars together? Will we ever be able to do it again, I wonder?"
"You shouldn't be out this late."
Without turning around, I answered: "Isn't it the same for you, guild master?"
Red eyes lit up in the darkness.
"Team Mudvyle seems to be doing well."
"..."
I didn't reply. ( I haven't searched since I met Monty...)
"Let us go inside," Ninetales said before disappearing into the guild. I followed without a word. When I reached the lowest floor, Ninetales was nowhere to be seen.
(Hm. I guess she went back to her room.)
The guild master slept separated from the guild members. Everyone had been inside it once, the day they had been taken in as apprentices. I glanced at the closed door and entered the corridor on the other side of the space. I walked quietly, not wanting to wake anyone. When I passed the opening that led to Monty's room, I halted hesitantly.
( I was a little harsh earlier...) I thought. I looked around, but there was no one else. After some more hesitation, I entered the hole.
"...Monty?"
No reply.
(Wh-What?) I stared at the empty bed, shocked. (He couldn't be...)
I immediately turned around and rushed through the dark corridor.
